Social and economic impacts of the pandemic in the United States, Mexico and Canada
To mark Welcoming Week, on September 9th, 2022 Metropolis Americas, Georgetown University and the University of Manitoba will release the results of the final wave of the multi-year research project, COVID-19’s Socio-Economic Impact on Indigenous Peoples and Newcomers in the United States, Mexico and Canada at a one-day forum. Funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research, this project focuses on migrants, racialized communities/persons of color and Indigenous peoples.
Experts from the three countries will share observations and insights from the five waves of surveys in the three countries with large oversamples of the foreign-born population, selected ethnic groups and Indigenous peoples. Discussions will centre upon lessons learned in the three countries and areas for multinational cooperation.
Among the speakers featured will be Adam Hunter, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Immigration Policy, U.S. Department of Homeland Security (TBC), Alexandra Hiles, Minister (Migration) / Sr. Area Director for the U.S. at the Embassy of Canada, Katharine Donato, Donald G. Herzberg Professor of International Migration at Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of International Migration, Lori Wilkinson, Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at University of Manitoba, Kiera Ladner, Professor of Political Science at University of Manitoba , Julia Gelatt, Senior Policy Analyst at the Migration Policy Institute, Jack Jedwab, President and CEO of the Association for Canadian Studies and the Metropolis Institute, Agustin Escobar Latapi, Researcher at CIESAS, Rodolfo Cruz, Director of the Population Studies Department at COLEF and Andrew Lim, Director of Research at the American Immigration Council.
