25th Metropolis Canada Conference

25 Years of Conversation on Migration: Our Legacy, Our Future

SUMMARY

25th Metropolis Canada Conference

25 Years of Conversation on Migration: Our Legacy, Our Future

March 16-18, 2023 | The Westin Ottawa, Ontario

9am - 4:30pm each day
TO BE HELD IN PERSON

This year will mark 25 years since the first National Metropolis (Metropolis Canada) conference was held. Today, Metropolis Canada is by far the country’s largest annual gathering of immigrant service providers, policy makers and researchers. It’s thanks to so many of you who come to the Conference each year that we’ve remained the country’s premier event on key issues around immigration, integration and settlement. Over twenty-five years of conversation together, we’ve created an unprecedented body of work on migration. This anniversary offers us an important opportunity to take stock of how immigration, integration and settlement have evolved over time and reflect upon what the future might hold. It also comes at a pivotal time with the country admitting record numbers of newcomers as our world navigates elevated degrees of economic and political and environmental uncertainty.

Please join us in Ottawa at Westin from March 16-18th 2023 for the annual Metropolis Canada Conference: “25 YEARS OF CONVERSATION ON MIGRATION: OUR LEGACY, OUR FUTURE”. We fully expect this will be the largest Metropolis Canada Conference to date.

The call for proposals aims to cover the widest possible range of topics on immigration, integration, inclusion and identities. As always, immigrant service providers, policy makers and researchers and other key stakeholders from across Canada will have the opportunity to hold in-depth conversations about emerging policy needs, best practices share the latest data and research findings so we can all leverage the vast knowledge that has been cultivated from our Metropolis network to move the immigration conversation forward.

Preliminary program

A final and complete program with additional information (exhibitors, maps, etc) will be posted shortly.

The Child and Youth Refugee Research Coalition (CYRRC)

9am-3pm, Wednesday, March 15, 2023
Room Governor General 1, The Westin Hotel, Ottawa, Ontario

Cost: $95 per person; $45 for students

On March 15, 2023, join the Child and Youth Refugee Research Coalition (CYRRC) as we present and discuss recent research on social integration, economic outcomes, education, and the mental and physical wellbeing of refugee children, youth, and families across Canada.

New Research to Inform Policy and Practice

The Child and Youth Refugee Research Coalition (CYRRC) is a network of academics, service providers, community partners, and government agencies. Funded through a $2.5M SSHRC Partnership Grant, we have carried out more than 90 studies over the past five years, as well as promoted best practices and knowledge mobilization.

What to Expect

This workshop will bring together researchers, service providers organizations (SPOs), community partners, and people with lived experience (PWLEs) to discuss supports that are needed at home and in schools to support refugee children and youth. Participants will also consider how research is used by SPOs and community partners to support refugee children, youth, and families, and how this impact can be strengthened.

Keynote Speaker

CYRRC is very pleased to welcome as our keynote speaker, Hanen Nanna — a war survivor and Syrian refugee who made Toronto home in 2016. Hanen is one of the youngest social entrepreneurs in Canada and the founder of BAM - Books Art Music Collective. She was an Ontario caucus advisor to the House of Commons and currently works in politics. Hanen is passionate about bridging gender gaps and increasing women's political power. In 2021, she was featured on CBC’s “The Dream Team” and received mentorship from Manjit Minhas — the famous venture capitalist from Dragons’ Den.

Panel Discussion

The panel discussion will bring an interdisciplinary perspective to the question of how best to support
refugee children, youth and families at home, school, and in the community. Panelists include:
 Susan Brigham, Mount St. Vincent University - Persisting and resisting: Youth with Refugee
Experience accessing education in Halifax.
 Reza Nakhaie, University of Windsor - Mental Health of Newcomer Refugee and Immigrant
Youth During Covid-19.
