MIGRATING IDENTITIES: CONVERSATIONS ON SETTLEMENT AND INTEGRATION IN DIVERSE COMMUNITIES ACROSS CANADA

SUMMARY

The 6th metropolis identities summit

Migrating Identities:
Conversations on settlement and integration in diverse communities across Canada

November 1-3, 2023 | The Hyatt Regency Calgary, Alberta
TO BE HELD IN PERSON

The 2021 census reported that immigrants made up the largest share of the country’s population in over 150 years and the federal government recently unveiled plans to increase the number of immigrants entering Canada to 500 000 by 2025. Immigrants continue to shape who we are as Canadians and contribute to ever deepening our cultural diversity with the ensuing changes felt across the entire country. This 6th annual Metropolis Identities Summit (previously Metropolis Measuring Identities) will examine the roles and responsibilities of the key actors and stakeholders that oversee migration and manage Canada’s diversity. The Summit will examine the societal changes to which migration gives rise and notably its broader impact (s) on institutions and communities across Canada. It will look at how the country is faring in the ongoing fight against discrimination.

Amongst the questions to be considered: how and where do government(s), civil society, industry and other stakeholders fit into the immigration ecosystem? What good practices are in place and/or require adaptation in
pursuing shared immigration objectives and goals? What does the sector need to prioritize as it collectively faces perhaps the largest influx of newcomers in the country’s history? In what ways is the immigrant experience evolving and how does that affect the response from welcoming communities? How should policies and programs be adapted in the area of cultural diversity and the fight against discrimination?

Identity Insights:
Unveiling the Power of the Canadian Index for Measuring Identities and Integration

October 31st, 2023 | The Hyatt Regency Calgary, Alberta

9am - 4:30pm

What is the CIMII?
The Canadian Index for Measuring Integration and Inclusion (CIMII) is a uniquely Canadian resource that evaluates the extent to which relative parity has been achieved between immigrants and the Canadian-born population in 10 provinces and 35 census metropolitan areas (CMAs) over the past 30 years (from 1991-2021). The online CIMII tool presents unadjusted (descriptive) and adjusted (inferential) population-based data for some 22 indicators across four key dimensions: economic, social, civic and democratic participation, and health and was designed for policymakers, researchers, settlement service provider organizations (SPOs), local immigration partnerships (LIPs) and other settlement sector stakeholders.

Who should attend the CIMII pre-conference forum?
- If you are a settlement worker who designs or identifies community-based programs and services for newcomers and refugees
- If you are a researcher or student interested in learning more about the local needs of newcomers and refugees and exploring rich data about these populations
- If you are a policymaker working in the settlement field and need accessible and reliable data for decision-making, program design, needs assessments, or evaluation purposes
- If you are interested in learning more about settlement outcomes through an equity and inclusion lens

What will be presented at the CIMII pre-conference forum?
The CIMII forum will convene some of our nation’s leading immigrant integration and inclusion experts. The one-day event will include keynote speakers, interactive discussions, and thematic workshops. More information will be posted soon!
