On June 2nd, Metropolis CARES (Coalition Assisting Refugee Entry and Settlement) and the Metropolis Institute will be holding a public webinar on the situation of Ukrainian refugees in Poland and Canada that seeks to share knowledge and insights on the role of host societies in the entry and settlement of the refugees during this time of crisis. The objective of the webinar is to foster cooperation between Canada and Poland with a view to identifying best practices in support of the refugees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding the Views of Host\/Receiving Communities in Poland and Canada<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To-date Poland has taken in the majority of Ukrainian refugees since the Russian invasion. Many Poles have been welcoming Ukrainian families into their homes, gathering donations and volunteering to help. But there are growing public concerns about a reduced capacity to accommodate the various needs of the refugees and other countries will have to step in to support their entry and settlement. Canada is a key actor in this regard. Over the past few years it has dealt with multiple waves of refugees and there are concerns about capacity. Workshops will examine the views of the host or welcoming communities and share insights into how they respectively view the situation of the refugees.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Situation on the Ground for Ukrainian Refugees in Poland and Canada<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues with no end in sight, refugees are arriving with few resources and frequently in need of considerable assistance. Poland has established several reception centers across the country to receive and assist Ukrainian refugees. Canada has many established migrant settlement agencies across the country that are tasked with supporting newcomers. Both countries have varying challenges in addressing the needs of the refugees for shelter\/housing, work, accessing health services and providing support to children and the elderly, amongst other things. This round table will hear from people on the ground in Poland and Canada to see what insights can be shared in responding effectively to the needs of the refugees.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
